Why sail there, then?

I often get asked why I sail in certain areas at certain times. This is a great question. There are a lot of factors that go into the decision of where and when I'll sail in different locations. Weather is definitely the biggest contributing factor, as this drastically impacts our adventure. For example, sailing in Thailand in April is a very bad idea. It would seem ideal, between the summer and monsoon season, but it's actually the hottest and most humid time of year in Thailand. There's also zero wind during this time, which is not the best for a sailing vacation. Remember, we don't have air conditioning, so having cool evenings is key. I also wouldn't suggest a trip to the Caribbean in hurricane season, or the Mediterranean sea in the winter. The Med in the winter is a very chilly experience!

Another factor when deciding on a location is tourism. We sail in such beautiful destinations, and others want to see these amazing places too. Sometimes too many people! For example, Croatia and Greece in August. I've learned the hard way to avoid these areas during peak season. Masses of straight people really takes away from our vibe!

And I always think about the groups safety. Is it a location that is safe and welcoming to the gay community? I can assure you, I won't lead a trip in a location that isn't at least accepting of our culture. There's always different levels of acceptance, but overall the locations we sail in are very safe, and at least understanding and welcoming of our community.

These are typically the main contributing factors when considering a location. Oh, and, warm exotic locations we are free to vacation as our authentic selves, which typically means in the nude! We have to make sure it's a gay vacation after all...
